Previously untapped, works from or about the Southeast Asian country are now read for bracing ideas on language, ethnicity and diaspora. In his monograph Malaysian Crossings, Chan Cheow Thia shows how the minor literary formation’s grasp of its own marginality in the world-Chinese literary space constitutes the threshold—instead of a hurdle—to creating signature aesthetic imprints that foster global outlooks.

Writing as well as reading, in fact, thinking too, have been evolving over recent decades. What methods of writing and thinking are effective today, both in attracting readers and in expressing novel ideas in easily accessible ways? “Non-fiction” suggests a preoccupation with facts and probabilities, while being “creative” suggests a search to tell things not only as they are, but in ways that are succinct, accessible and relatable. The panelists discuss how and why “creative non-fiction” is becoming a preferred form to stimulate writing and encourage reading.

This session revisits the publication during the Covid-19 period of As Empires Fell. The Life and Times of Lee Hau-Shik, the First Finance Minister of Malaya (2020) and the publication this year of the Chinese version of The Reluctant Politician. Tun Dr Ismail and His Time (2006), both written by Ooi Kee Beng. On stage with Ooi moderating the session, will be Tawfik Tun Dr Ismail, the son of Tun Dr Ismail, and Antony Lee, the grandson of Lee Hau-Shik.
